Why is Testing Important?

Nearly 40% of new HIV infections are transmitted by people who don't know they have the virus.

An estimated 1.2 million people in the United States have HIV, including about 158,500 people who are unaware of their status.

Studies show that the sooner people start HIV treatment after diagnosis, the more they benefit.

I learned most of my survival skills from learning to cope with living with HIV. I was not always undetectable and untransmittable as the slogan goes. I was not always unafraid and unashamed. Three years ago, I was homeless and unemployable. Early on medical professions said in order to survive, I must adhere to a strict medication regiment. However, I couldn’t because I and my child had no stable living arrangement. Because of the medical support and guidance from AFH I no longer worry about being able keeping up with and taking multiple medications and have found a regime that is easy and keeps me healthy. Thanks to the AIDS Foundation, I now have my own apartment and I can be sure where I will lay my head each night."
